I think PSP is a bit easier to learn, but Photoshop has a lot more features. Since I took the time to properly learn Photoshop I have never touched PSP.

Photoshop ALL the way. IMO it has more features than any other grphics program.
It is harder to learn than others but once you get the hang of it, everything will be much easier from there.
Painter is not too bad either but it has more Artistic feel to it than Photoshop.

The CD's for Paint Shop Pro will make for wonderful coasters once you use photoshop! Painter is cool, get a stylus for it though! it really is the only way to use that cool software! I am still curious as to see if Adobe will destroy all the cool macromedia stuff since they bought em. I think dreamweaver pwned GoLive. Adobe Dreamweaver....WOW that just looks wierd. Like seeing Mario on a X-Box package if Microsoft ever bought out nintendo.
I tell you what a daunting program is to use! 3D packages! like Lightwave, Mayaq or 3DS Max! OMG at first the interface is like ... like......OMFG!!!!
Once Photoshop basics are covered you fly with it, you learn that there are endless ways to do the same thing and you develop your own "style" with it.

Does anyone know of anywhere I can find a usful tutorial for Photoshop 8?
Maybe like the ones for FlashMX 2004, because frankly the ones that Photoshop came with are even more complicated than trial-and-error.

try 3dBuzz It is for game making and modding and since Photoshop is a MASSIVE element in game making (textures and maps) they have some tutorials there....possibly video tuts!

www.tutorialoutpost.com
www.good-tutorials.com
I used to live by those sites when I first started messing around with Photoshop.

I`ve used PSP7 and now have 9. It`s very good for photo editing and easy to learn. If your going to do this professionally, go PS if your just going to dick around making sigs and such why pay $500 when you can get PSP for $75 - $100. Also as Algren stated, try the Gimp, your not wasting any money with it.

The Gimp is a free photo editing suite....some say comparable to photoshop. It'll atleast give you the option to explore the possibilities and decide if Photoshop is really the best way to spend your $500

can i say thank you so very much a thousand times for the link to gimp
the only image editor i have on my comp came with my digital camera.. photoimpression3.. it sucks and uses way to much memory when in use..... and it's sometimes impossible to do what i want (like make an avatar of a specific size) and i just don't have the cash to spend on photoshop.. this program is great!!
